Free-range Norfolk cockerels

Our free-range cockerels aren’t just high welfare — they taste like chicken used to. Raised here on Morton’s Farm in rural Norfolk, they roam freely on pasture and grow at a natural pace for over 100 days.

We rear a slow-growing French breed, allowing the birds to mature fully without being pushed to fatten quickly. Their diet includes high-quality cereals from a local Norfolk mill and home-grown oats from our own fields. The result? Exceptional flavour, firm texture and a true taste of traditional free-range poultry — perfect for an alternative Christmas centrepiece.

What makes our free-range cockerels special

  • Slow-grown French breed, reared for over 100 days
  • Free to roam with excellent welfare standards
  • Fed on locally milled cereals and home-grown oats
  • Naturally matured for rich, full flavour and tender meatPerfect alternative to turkey for smaller Christmas gatherings
  • Available for collection from our Norfolk farm or delivery within the UK
A one star Great Taste Award winner, here's what the judges had to say "A good looking bird of substantial size. The Meat was moist and flavourful - the breast cut well. The dark meat had a great depth of flavour. Nice example of a free-range chicken."

You haven't tasted real chicken until you've tried our traditional Norfolk free-range cockerel!

What is a Norfolk Bronze cockerel

Reared in small groups in mobile sheds, our cockerels get full roam off the hedges and fields during the day.

Free-range cockerels are good, but these are better- large, slow-growing birds have plenty of flavour, with lots of meat to go around. We think they're unlike anything you'll taste anywhere else.

This is how chicken used to taste before intensive farming introduced inferior breeds with no flavour. This is the perfect centrepiece for a special Sunday lunch or Christmas dinner!

Mortons Standard

As with all our turkeys, our Norfolk Black/Bronze have had a free-range life before being humanely dispatched.  We dry-pluck our turkeys by hand and leave them to hang for a truly unique flavour.
